The HMS Conway Merchant Navy Cadet School at Llanfair PG, Anglesey, N Wales, founded in 1859, aimed to prepare young men for careers at sea in the British Merchant Navy. Many thousands of young men were trained and educated there, went to sea as Cadets and then qualified as Merchant Navy Officers

The school closed in the late 1970’s because of changes in the secondary and further education systems and changes in Merchant Navy Training. Now the Conway Merchant Navy Trust, its successor, maintains the same objectives and offers full sponsorship to a limited number of young men and women each year wishing to become Deck or Engineer Officers. The Trust is a Registered Charity and is run with the co-operation of the UK Chamber of Shipping.  The Trust is governed by a board of Trustees some of whom are themselves ‘Old Conways’, whilst others are drawn from all parts of the Shipping industry. Most have served at sea in the Merchant or Royal Navies.

Did you know that............?
...there are many in all walks of life who began their education at Conway and then went on to achieve great success in other fields.  Among them are the former Poet Laureate John Masefield. If you studied English Literature at school you may be familiar with those immortal lines from his poem Sea Fever.
“I must go down to the sea again; to the lonely sea and the sky....”
