Training for a Maritime Career…

Your training will take four years during which time you serve as an Officer Trainee.  Training programmes are made up of alternating periods of training at sea and study at one of the UK’s maritime University departments.

At Sea

Your seagoing training will enable you to put into practice what you learn at college by understudying the officers on board.   But a programme of specific practical training tasks also forms part of your time on board ship. The Trust works with a number of prominent UK shipping companies which provide seagoing training berths on their ships for Conway Trainees.  This has the advantage of giving you experience in different types of ship – something not always available to the single company cadet.

At University

As well as theoretical studies you will use the latest computer controlled engine room, radar and navigation simulators; and practical training in the important areas of safety, survival and fire fighting.   All schemes followed by Conway Trainees are approved by the Merchant Navy Training Board and the Maritime & Coastguard Agency.  And you will be studying alongside trainees from a number of other companies and sponsors – something to help broaden your horizons. Your Degree studies are built into the programmes for Deck and Engineer Officers. There may also be opportunities to study for further qualifications.

All the training schemes require a commitment to hard work and personal qualities which accept the challenge of developing technology. You will also need to be physically fit. The MCA medical and eyesight examination ( particularly for Deck Officer Trainees) must be passed before applying for sponsorship. You also need to get on easily with your fellow trainees. Running a modern Merchant Ship requires good teamwork skills but also involves a high degree of personal responsibility.

Conway works with Chiltern Maritime Ltd. Chiltern are an experienced Training Management company. Trainees have contact with and support from both Conway and Chiltern throughout their training.

Did You Know...?

  • ...Deck Officers with a Class 1 Certificate of Competency (Master) plus a BSc Honours degree in Marine Science, have a range of career options open to them after they have gained experience at sea.

    These include Ship Management, Surveying, Management in Ports and Harbours, Pilotage, Teaching and Government service. In a number of cases this will, of course, require further study and qualification (such as a relevant degree) but their seagoing experience will be an important foundation...
